What Does a Panel Beater Do?

A panel beater repairs the body panels of a vehicle, such as the doors, guards, bonnet, boot and quarter panels. The job is to take a panel that has been dented, creased or knocked out of shape and bring it back to its original contour and alignment. A complete smash repair can involve panel beating alongside structural work and paint after a larger collision. If the damage is limited to one or more panels, panel beating is usually what you are after.
Assess the panel

We inspect the damaged panel and the area around it to work out what is needed.

Remove dents & creases

Dents are worked out and creases are removed from the panel.

Reshape the metal

The panel is reshaped back to its original form and profile.

Restore alignment

Panel alignment is restored so the gaps and body lines sit evenly again.

Prepare for refinishing

The repaired panel is prepared so it can be colour matched and refinished.

Panel Damage We Repair

Most panel damage falls into a handful of common types, and we repair all of them. Not sure whether your damage counts as a panel repair? Send us a photo or bring the car in and we will take a look.
Dents
From car park dings and door dents through to deeper dents, worked out and refinished.
Creases
Creases from knocks, scrapes and low-speed impacts reshaped back to the panel’s proper line.
Deformed panels
Panels pushed in or deformed after a minor accident, repaired or replaced as required.
Hail damage
Multiple small dents across the roof, bonnet and panels, often repaired with paintless dent removal.
Panels needing replacement
Body panels that are too damaged to restore properly are replaced with a new panel.
Panel alignment
Doors, bonnets and boots that no longer sit flush, realigned so everything closes and lines up.

Should Your Panel Be Repaired or Replaced?

Not every damaged panel can, or should, be repaired. We give you an honest recommendation after we have looked at the vehicle, rather than pushing one option over the other. The decision comes down to a few things:
How severe the damage is

Light dents and creases are usually repairable; heavier damage can tip the balance toward replacement.

Where the damage sits

Damage on an edge, a swage line or a complex curve is harder to restore than a flat area.

Condition of the panel

An older or previously repaired panel may not hold a fresh repair as well as replacing it would.

How far the metal is stretched

Once the metal is badly stretched or torn, a new panel is often the better outcome.

Restoring shape and strength

The panel needs to return to its proper shape and strength, not just look right.

Repair versus replacement cost

Sometimes fitting a new panel is more practical and cost effective than a lengthy repair.

Want the detail on how that call is made? Read our guide on panel beating vs panel replacement.

Our Panel Beating Process

The right method depends on the damage, so the exact steps can vary from one job to the next.

Assess

We inspect the damaged panel and surrounding area to work out the full extent of the damage.

Determine the repair

We decide whether the panel should be repaired or replaced, and which method suits the damage.

Repair & reshape

We remove dents, work out creases and reshape the panel, or fit a replacement panel where needed.

Prepare & refinish

The area is prepared and refinished, colour matched with our spray painting to blend in.

Inspect

We check the finished panel, the alignment and the paint before you collect the car.

Paintless dent repair

Paintless Dent Repair for Suitable Damage

Paintless dent repair, or PDR, works dents out from behind the panel without repainting it. Because the original paint stays on the car, it can be a quicker and tidier option for the right kind of damage.
It is not right for everything. Where the paint is cracked, the metal is badly stretched, or the dent sits on a sharp edge, conventional panel beating and refinishing is the better path. We will tell you which applies once we have seen the damage.
We work with all major Australian insurers.

How Much Does Panel Beating Cost?

There is no single price for panel beating. The cost depends on the size of the damaged area, where the panel sits, how severe the damage is, whether the paint is also damaged, whether the panel is repaired or replaced, the make and model, and any parts required. The figures below are a general guide only.

Single-panel dent repair

$350–$800

Larger damage, 2 to 3 panels

$900–$2,500

Hail damage (paintless dent removal)

From $150 per panel

Panel replacement

Quote required

These are indicative ranges only. The final price depends on inspecting the vehicle and confirming exactly what the repair involves, which is why we quote each job after a look. Assessments are free.

Panel Beating for Insurance & Private Repairs

We handle panel repairs both through insurance and privately. If you are making a claim, we can look after the repair side and help you through the process, including dealing with the assessor. If you would rather not claim, or the damage is minor enough that a private repair makes more sense, we can quote the work directly.
